i've relocated to seattle, washington, and rented a studio space! the studio has an open house every three months, so i'm very much looking forward to getting some exposure/selling some work (maybe?). i find it very hard to part with my artwork unless i plan it from the beginning. that is, if i paint something specifically as a gift for a friend or a commission, i have no trouble watching it change hands. however, most of my artwork i do for myself, both in terms of property ownership and in terms of psychological benefit, and it's difficult to see it go.
i had one painting a few years ago that i did for a student exhibit in a local craft/curiosity shop ("stagnation pressure" in my gallery, if you're curious). i was told that was all it would be-an exhibit. turns out they were offering the paintings for sale, a fact that was not made clear me nor the other participating students. mine sold. of course, it's great to know there are people out there that like my work enough to pay for it, and it's cool to think of strangers looking at it every day and enjoying it, but i was a little peeved. partially because the shop set the selling price and payout to the artists ($100/$50). i was mostly upset, though, because i liked the painting! i was quite attached to it and wanted it back for myself. purchaser, whoever you are, i really hope you like that painting.
now though, that i'm living on my own and taken all of my paintings from my parents house (pretty much the whole house was a metaphorical refrigerator for my work), i realize that i don't, and probably won't anytime soon, have the space to hang it all. the walls of my (albeit, tiny) apartment are covered as it is with many pieces behind my dresser, under my bed, and in my art studio. it's a shame to see it all covered up, so maybe i'll start selling things so that it can hang somewhere.
that being said, anyone local to seattle and interested in commissioning work or purchasing something already completed, send me a message and maybe we can work something out.
